The father of Shining et That did not yet have the reputation he enjoys today, but had already won over the press with his mastery of the horror genre. By his own admission, the novel was a tribute to Dracula by Bram Stoker. It was while teaching the iconic work to his students that he had the idea of transposing the count into an American context in the late 1970s. He thus combined this idea with more contemporary inspirations, such as Tales from the Crypt which fed his imagination.
