The next Mission Impossible film, recently renamed “Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning” will soon arrive in theaters. Release date, casting, plot… Here is everything you need to know about the feature film which could close the “Mission: Impossible” franchise with Tom Cruise, 30 years after its launch.
“The Final Reckoning” is now the official title of “Mission Impossible 8”, which was originally supposed to be “Part 2” of “Dead Reckoning”, released in 2023. It is directed by Christopher McQuarrie, returning as director and co-writer after directing “Rogue Nation,” “Fallout” and “Dead Reckoning.” He had already collaborated with Tom Cruise on the “Jack Reacher” franchise as well as “Top Gun: Maverick”.
The plot
The details of the story are still mostly under wraps, however it is known that “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” will respond to the suspense left by “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1”.
Ethan Hunt and his loyal team of spies hunted an enemy from Ethan’s past and a dangerous artificial intelligence nicknamed “The Entity”, capable of destroying the world. The film ended on a cliffhanger with the death of a member of Ethan’s team and a desperate race to destroy the “Entity”, before evil parties could get a hold of it.
The trailer
The first trailer for “Final Reckoning” (which can be translated into French as “The Last Judgment”) was released on November 11, exciting fans while leaving them sad at the thought that it might end. act from the last film in the saga with Tom Cruise, clues suggesting that the agent is preparing to embark on his final mission.
For the record, Tom Cruise is wearing the same outfit as the one he wore during his spectacular show during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, on August 11.
Featuring footage from the previous films, the video, which begins with a voiceover warning that “our lives are not defined by a single act of ours. Our lives are the sum of our choices,” shows some of the big action sequences from the previous films and ends with Ethan Hunt (Cruise) asking someone off-screen to trust him “one last time.”

No one involved with the film has formally confirmed that Part 8 will be the true conclusion. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Paramount wants to promote this eighth film as the “final” installment of the franchise, in order to stimulate public interest.

Tom Cruise is known for performing most of his own stunts. And this time he gave himself in the water, on land and in the air… As always, the essentials of the franchise are in the spotlight: perilous missions in the four corners of the world, death-defying stunts, crazy chases in cars, hand-to-hand combat and of course Tom Cruise’s iconic sprint scenes, which have become his character’s trademark since the first opus released in 1996 and directed by Brian de Palma.
The trailer shows some snippets of these adrenaline-charged sequences, like when Hunt and his team track down a sunken submarine that houses the AI. Ethan Hunt attempts to enter to destroy what is known as “the Entity”, and a new sequence in the air sees Hunt hanging from a biplane.
Le casting
Most of the main cast from “Dead Reckoning” will return in the sequel, including Hayley Atwell as thief Grace, Simon Pegg as tech expert Benji Dunn, Ving Rhames as hacker Luther Stickell, and Pom Klementieff as assassin-turned-ally Paris.
Angela Bassett will reprise her role as Erika Sloane, director of the CIA, and Vanessa Kirby as arms dealer Alanna Mitsopolis alongside Frederick Schmidt as her brother, Zola. Shea Whigham and Greg Tarzan Davis also return to play intelligence agents Jasper Briggs and Degas. Rolf Saxon reprises his role as CIA analyst William Donloe from the first film.
Tom Cruise and his team will also be joined by a handful of new characters played by familiar faces: “Ted Lasso” star Hannah Waddingham, “The Mandalorian” star Katy O’Brian, and “Severance” star “. Former “Parks & Recreation” actor Nick Offerman will play Sydney, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, alongside “Mindhunter” star Holt McCallany as Bernstein, the U.S. Secretary of Defense.
A delayed release
Paramount, which has earned more than 4 billion dollars worldwide thanks to the franchise (including 790 million thanks to “Fallout”, the most lucrative part) had started filming in March 2022. The latter had been temporarily interrupted for the promotional tour for “Dead Reckoning Part 1,” then suspended in July 2023 due to strikes in Hollywood. Production then resumed in March 2024 and finally wrapped in November 2024. Paramount would like to present the film, whose budget is approaching $400 million due to production delays, in Cannes, THR reported.
“The Final Reckoning” will be released in theaters in France on May 21, 2025.
