Will you accept this new mission? This is the question that Tom Cruise – aka Ethan Hunt – asks us in the teaser for the next opus of the action and espionage franchise that Paramount unveiled this Monday. A new film that looks like a swan song, and moreover entitled Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning.

The ultimate mission for Tom Cruise?
This direct sequel to the film Mission Impossible : Dead Reckoning will continue to follow Ethan Hunt and his team in their fight against “The Entity”, an artificial intelligence capable of influencing the world.
Freed from CIA orders, Hunt will try to put an end to this unprecedented threat, which everyone wants to gain control of. But to defeat it, he will have to sacrifice what he holds most dear in the world. As the film's official synopsis mysteriously states, “Our lives are the sum of our choices”.

Originally planned as a real “second part” to the previous opus released in 2023, this next part of the saga (which should also have been called Dead Reckoning – part 2) experienced a change of direction following the film's lackluster performance at the box office. It only raised $570 million with a budget of nearly $300 million.
A light public reception which forced Paramount to finally give this “Mission Impossible 8” the subtitle of “Final Reckoning”, and to give it the trappings of a disastrous conclusion, visibly against the advice of Tom Cruise himself who could see himself chasing bad guys around the world until he's 80.

As a reminder, the franchise Mission Impossible is one of the flagships of Paramount Pictures, and has totaled more than $4.1 billion at the worldwide box office in seven films. The Final Reckoning will, however, have to be a success for the studio, which apparently spent nearly $400 million in its production, which began in March 2022 and was suspended in 2023 due to the Hollywood strike.
Directed by Christopher McQuarrie – already at the helm of the last three installments – and written by McQuarrie and Erik Jendresen, Mission Impossible : The Final Reckoning will see the return – around the ever-present Tom Cruise – of the cast of well-known faces: Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Vanessa Kirby, Hayley Atwell, Angela Bassett, Pom Klementieff and even Esai Morales.
They are joined for the occasion by new actors, including Hannah Waddingham (Ted Lasso), Nick Offerman (The Last of Us) and Indira Varma (Game of Thrones).
We will have to wait until May 21, 2025 to discover in theaters the fate of Ethan Hunt and his friends. In addition to the teaser, a first poster for the film was revealed:
In the meantime, you can see (or rewatch) the films in the franchise on the Netflix, Paramount+ and Canal+ streaming platforms.
