Covenant deserves a sequel more than Romulus according to Ridley Scott and it’s defensible

Since the success ofAlien : Romuluseveryone is expecting a sequel to be confirmed any moment now. But Ridley Scott, historic director of the saga, thinks that the story to be continued is not that of Fede Álvarez’s film…

In October, Steve Asbell, boss of 20th Century Studios, announced thata sequel to Alien : Romulus was deep in thought and that it was only a matter of time before Fede Álvarez was rehired as director. On the television side, xenomorphs also have a bright future, since Noah Hawley’s series, whose plot takes place 30 years before the events of the first film, is scheduled for 2025.

But Ridley Scott, father of the saga, would like to extend the story as he sees fit.and neither the continuation of Romulusnor the new timeline explored by the series are clearly among its priorities. Instead, Scott would like to return to what he put in place in the Prometheus et Alien : Covenantwhich he made himself, and he had everything planned for it.

So, what happens next?

Covenant or Romulus, who will be the next Alien?

In a long interview given to The Hollywood ReporterRidley Scott recently gave his views on many subjects. He notably addressed the question of the future of the franchise he initiated in 1979 with Ripley’s first adventures. If the director in full promotion of Gladiator 2 always said he was happy with Fede Álvarez’s work on Romuluseven announcing that he was hoping for a sequel to the last opus, his priority now seems to have changed.

Scott dreams of a sequel, yes, but rather that ofAlien : Covenant. However, this part signed by Scott which succeeded Prometheus and released in theaters in 2017 is one of the most unloved of the entire saga. Failure at the box office (the film only grossed 240 million, almost half as much as Prometheus), Covenant is quite widely rejected by fans for the way in which it twists the mythology of the first films and portrays characters who are not always very brilliant. Yet, according to Ridley Scott, the story of Covenant is the one to pursue :

“Covenant is the most appropriate [pour une suite]because they leave the girl there in the [pod d’hibernation] and David [l’androïde meurtrier] finds himself in possession of alien eggs while 2,000 colonists hang around. It’s a perfect start.”

Katherine Waterston as Daniels

Could Scott prioritize this project, ahead of the possibility of a sequel to Romulus ? It is true that the end of Covenant placed all the pawns necessary to launch a new storymore than Romulus the conclusion of which is sufficient in itself. However, there is little chance that the 20th Century will follow this project, Álvarez’s film having made better numbers than Covenant.

Especially since, even if Álvarez had had the delicacy to take into account Scott’s opinion on certain aspects of Romulusthe original director no longer owns the rights to his franchise, too the studio has no obligation to realize its fantasies.

There is therefore little chance that the idea of a sequel to Covenant puts obstacles in the way of the potential aftermath of Romulusbut, if necessary, it is good to know that Ridley Scott has no shortage of ideas to continue to fuel the saga of which he is the creator. In the meantime, it’s his famous Gladiator that he did indeed follow up, and Gladiator 2 will be available in theaters from November 22, 2024.
