Box office: “L’Amour ouf” exceeds 3 million admissions, “Venom: The Last Dance” starts strong, the latest Eastwood misses the podium

Despite the start of the school year and a slight drop in attendance, “L’Amour ouf” continues to dominate the box office in . For its third week of release, Gilles Lellouche’s film totaled 864,000 additional admissions, recording a moderate drop of 26% compared to the previous week. With a still impressive average of 60 admissions per screening, the feature film now exceeds 3 million tickets sold. This is the 7th film released in 2024 to reach this symbolic milestone. A success which testifies to the return to grace of French cinema: three national films exceeded three million admissions this year, an unprecedented event since 2018.

“Monsieur Aznavour” remains on the podium, the Palme d’Or effect for “Anora”

“L’Amour ouf” thus retains the lead at the box office for the third consecutive week. A feat for a French film, particularly popular with young spectators, which could propel its total admissions well beyond 5 million by the end of its theatrical run. This figure would then position it as the fourth biggest success of the year, behind “Vice Versa 2” but ahead of “Despicable Me 4”, in a Top 5 of the most solid, which will also include “Un p’tit truc more” and “The Count of Monte Cristo”. If the 2024 box office shows an overall drop in attendance, French films seem to be regaining a privileged place in the hearts of the public. With two of his most popular films of the year, Pierre Niney can boast of a successful double (he doubles a character in “Vice Versa 2”, editor’s note).

Among the new releases of the week, “Venom: The Last Dance” recorded 655,000 admissions for its first week and obtained the silver medal, thus ensuring the best start for the franchise since 2021. “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” had in indeed gathered 600,000 spectators when it was released in 2021. The new opus carried by Tom Hardy seems well on its way to reaching a million entries like its predecessors.

In third position, the biopic “Monsieur Aznavour”, which traces the life of the legendary French singer, also continues its journey, with 455,000 additional new entries this week. With more than a million tickets sold, the film directed by Tahar Rahim does better than “Juror No. 2”, which enters the ranking through the back door, only in 4th place. The legal drama by Clint Eastwood attracted 453,000 spectators for its first week, thus obtaining the best average per screening among new releases.

Note, in sixth position, the Palme d’Or “Anora”, directed by Sean Baker, attracted 212,000 spectators for its first week. Although the film is below other recipients of the prestigious award, such as “Anatomy of a Fall”, it nevertheless exceeds “Unfiltered” and is expected to reach 500,000 admissions, setting a record for the director in France.
