Without even intending it, the Twilight saga triggered a cinema trend at the end of the 2000s which still persists today, even if the phenomenon has taken a turn for the worse. A trilogy still attempted to reproduce the success of the vampire fresco with varying degrees of success. Despite terrible reviews, it earned hundreds of millions of US dollars at the box office.

A cinematic divergence

At the beginning of the 2010s, the Hollywood majors were desperate to launch their Young Adult film saga in order to ride the Twilight hype which ended in 2012 and which was immediately relaunched by The Hunger Games. Two years after the first adventures of Katniss Everdeen perceived as a “plagiarism” of Battle Royale by Quentin Tarantino, another successful literary series takes theaters by storm with Shailene Woodley and Theo James to form the leading duo and Kate Winslet to play the role of the antagonist.

Divergent was released in 2014 and struggled to convince both the press and the general public. The Rotten Tomatoes scores of 41% and 69% speak for themselves. However, the film brought in nearly 300 million US dollars for a budget of 85 million. The second film entitled “Divergent 2: Insurrection” which was destroyed by critics (29% on Rotten Tomatoes) manages to stay the course financially speaking, but begins a masterful fall into hell for Beatrice “Tris” Prior and her movement resistance. Divergent 3: Beyond the Wall just exceeds 10% on Rotten Tomatoes and crashes in theaters with 179.2 million gleaned at the end of the run. The trilogy still brought in more than 750 million for Lionsgate, capitalist honor is safe.

The synopsis of Divergent: Tris lives in a post-apocalyptic world where society is divided into five clans: “Bold, Erudite, Altruistic, Sincere, Brotherly”. At 16, she must choose where she belongs for the rest of her life. An extremely rare case, his aptitude test is inconclusive; she is Divergent. Divergents are rare individuals who do not belong to any clan and are hunted by the government. – (Amazon Prime Video – )

“Young Adult” literature takes on the 7th

The “Young Adult” tidal wave swept through the 7th Art starting in 2013. Alongside the end of Twilight and the beginnings of The Hunger Games, four franchises tried their luck, most of them in vain. Only the Labyrinth trilogy initiated in 2014 with Dylan O’Brien and Kaya Scodelario stands out and becomes a trilogy. For the other three (Beautiful Creatures, The Giver, The Mortal Instruments), it’s a cold shower and a brutal return to reality. Since then, production companies have taken a step back and are thinking twice before embarking on such an adaptation project.
