Far from the superheroic blockbusters and science fiction frescoes that top the box office, there is a more intimate cinema that is as captivating as it is touching. One film in particular managed to break the hearts of spectators and delight critics a few years ago. It is only available on this SVOD service.

The end of innocence

The feature film that brings us together this month of October 2024 is a little nugget of Belgian independent cinema released in French cinemas on November 1, 2022. Close is a coming-of-age drama directed and written by Lukas Dhont – Girl (2018), L’Infini (2014) and Corps perdu (2012) – having melted the press during the Film Festival, logically leaving with the Grand Prix after having conquered the Croisette. He was also present at the 95th Academy Awards where he competed for best international film, an award he did not win.

Close talks about the childhood of Léo and Rémi and their friendship broken following an unthinkable event. In search of an answer, Léo approaches Sophie, Rémi’s mother, in the hope of understanding. Close distributed by A24 (Everything Everywhere All at Once) in the United States attracts critics who give it a touching 91% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes while 88% of spectators were won over by this drama. Close is praised for his ability to move his audience and his tender look at the lost innocence of childhood.

“Utterly captivating and heartbreakingly sad.”… Lukas Dhont’s film certainly is. The performances of the main actors, both minors, described as “extraordinary” are caught in the act by a subtle camera that knows how to make itself very small to let the magic happen. Eden Dambrine and Gustav De Waele thus sign a memorable first performance alongside Emilie Dequenne and Léa Drucker. Close is available in on the SVOD Max service (formerly HBO Max).
