Apparently, everyone wants to do Speed 3 : Keanu Reeves, Sandra Bullock, and the Disney studio. So get ready, it might happen.
Speedit is one essentials from the 90swhich has been on television so many times that no one would dare count it. Released in 1994, the action film launched or confirmed the career of everyone: director Jan de Bont (whose first steps were, after a great career as a director of photography, notably with Paul Verhoeven and John McTiernan), screenwriter Graham Yost, Keanu Reeves (who was coming out of Dracula et Point Break), and Sandra Bullock (who was coming out of Demolition Man).
With more than 350 million at the box office for a budget of not even 40 million, Speed crushed everything in its paththe same year as True Lies, Stargate, L’Expert et Timecop. But the inevitable sequel put everyone's ideas back in place wallowing royally in 1997with a budget that had exploded (between 100 and 160 million, depending on sources) for a disastrous score at the box office (165 million).
Keanu Reeves had the good idea not to return in Speed 2: Heading towards dangerunlike Sandra Bullock. But nostalgia has devastating effects since thirty years after the first film, the duo seems ready to return, and the Disney studio would not spit on it.
KEANU REEVES AND SANDRA BULLOCK STARTING FOR SPEED 3
It's been in the air for several years and even more so for several months: and Speed 3 with Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock. The actor of Matrix et John Wick has notably spoken about it several times since 2019, just like his colleague since. And the 30th anniversary of the film in 2024 will certainly have helped to put the subject back on the table.
On October 8, 2024, Keanu Reeves, Sandra Bullock and Jan de Bont presented the film at a special screening at Beyond Fest in Los Angeles. And when the question of a Speed 3 arrived, the actress replied :
“The geriatric version. It won't be quick. […] It would ask a lot, from everyone. I don't know if we're still in an industry that could tolerate that and have the courage to do it. Maybe I'm wrong. »
DISNEY LEAVING FOR SPEED 3
Nothing very precise therefore, except that the subject was then broached with Steve Asbell, le boss de 20th Century Studios (the name of what remains of 20th Century Fox, at Disney). He is best placed to talk about it, and he has clearly left the door open during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in October 2024:
“Hollywood has enough courage for that. We have enough courage. We're waiting for the phone call! It's one of the last films that hasn't been remade yet. And to really have a reason to come back to it, it has to be a great idea, and an idea that excites the actors. Because they would be the reason to go see him. It's obviously an important title for us, but it's not something we would treat lightly or simply call on them for. They should be involved in the development of this idea. »
Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock said it themselves: Above all, they want to work together again. Speed would therefore be a pretext, and it is obviously the best starting point for a great film. They would in any case dictate the rules, with the big question of salaries (he would have received 15 million for John Wick 4).
Screenwriter Graham Yost also said he was ready to return for Speed 3more remains the question of director Jan de Bont. Sandra Bullock seemed to assume that he would be there, but nothing is less certain. After the success of Speed (1994) et Twister (1996), the decline was spectacular, with Speed 2 (1997), Haunting (1999) et Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life (2003). Since then, he has achieved nothing. It is therefore difficult to imagine that Disney will put him at the helm of a blockbuster of this caliber.
