After Stitch and Toothless, you will fall for “The Wild Robot”

If you don’t know the name Chris Sanders, chances are you’re familiar with his work. We owe him in particular the designs of Stitch for Lilo & Stitch and of Toothless for Dragonstwo films he co-directed with Dean DeBlois. The heroine of Robot sauvage is as endearing as these previous creations.

“I don’t have much to do with it,” Chris Sanders told us at the Festival. All the magic was already in Peter Brown’s novels. The director is too modest. The inspiration comes from books but the poetry of this story of a robot who escapes his programming to adopt a gosling also owes a lot to his drawings and his staging. Rarely have DreamWorks studios offered a work as sublime in its visuals as in its ecological message.

Very rich influences

“I obviously thought of Hayao Miyazaki and the robot from Castle in the Skyhe admits. Few filmmakers have known how to combine animation and ecology like Miyazaki-san. » To this obvious reference is added that of the Iron Giant by Brad Bird. “I embrace this idea because Brad offered a robot character who transcends his condition to reveal his humanity. »

Chris Sanders does the same with this endearing machine whose evolution takes place in intensely beautiful settings. “I also thought of C3-P0 from Stars Wars and to Robbie In Forbidden planetconfides Chris Saunders. I hope I have managed to capture a tiny part of the genius of the artists who influenced me. » He can reassure himself: The Wild Robot easily finds its place among these prestigious models. This film is a marvel (and we want a Roz figurine).
