In Luxembourg: “Our animated films measure up to the Americans”

“I spent some time looking at a pond in the forest where I walk my dog. The waves created by insects on the surface of the water, the size of water lilies… When working on an animated film whose hero is a frog, these are details that must be pointed out to the teams in order to transcribe them to the screen,” relates Cherifa Bakthi.

Sunday, during the 1535° open house in Differdange, the directors of the Fabrique d’images animation studio will present their work in progress: “Dudley and the invasion of the space slugs”, for Cherifa Bakthi, “The last dinosaur”, for Federico Milella and “Spiked”, for Caroline Origer.

In the large open space, where around fifty people work in all departments of films and 2D and 3D animated series, the atmosphere is studious. “If one department falls behind, it creates a snowball effect,” says Federico Milella.

The stakes are high. “The financing to be found for a film can be between 8 and 10 million euros,” testify Jean-Marie Musique and Mark Mertens, two of the producers of the Image Factory. “At the cinema, a family will choose between our film or an American production. We must therefore have the same qualities as the Americans.”

The recipe for success? “We choose our stories based on our favorites and we have a very experienced team.” “I would be incapable of composing music, but I rely on the know-how of a team who can transcribe the emotions useful to my story,” illustrates Federico Milella. On Sunday, the public will discover preview images.

Caroline Origer expects to welcome families again. “The return of the children is very enriching. For my last film, they told me that the villain had really impressed them, which I didn’t expect.
