“On Earth as in Heaven”, in free roux – Libération

Directed by Lou Thompson, Nathalie Saint-Pierre’s beautiful film about the flight of a Christian community to Montreal grabs our attention despite a few lengths.

The learning story attaches equal importance to the changes in consciousness of the little heroes projected into a foreign world and a new age, and to the changes in environment, decor, and even the change of scenery. Or how to move from a rural and moral, isolated world, to a decadent, teeming urban world, with sudden civilization. Coming out of the woods, out of the bush and out of your family, for the city and its perils, is the basis of On Earth as in Heaven. The film outlines the possibility of a third way, between the Village by M. Night Shyamalan – but without twist or fantasy – and Witness of Peter Weir – but without a murder or a cop in the investigation – and choosing to stay in town. Montreal is the motif of Nathalie Saint-Pierre’s film, the exotic environment placing its young heroine right in the middle, centered in the panoramic format: Clara. Discovering the city is simultaneously discovering an actress: autumnal Montreal and Lou Thompson, brilliant.
