The “Joker: Folie à deux”, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, topped the North American box office this weekend, ahead of “The Wild Robot”, according to estimates on Sunday from the Exhibitor Relations firm.
This new opus of the Joker, Batman’s sworn enemy, is at the crossroads of the musical comedy and the comic book universe, and was directed again by Todd Phillips.
The film produced by Warner Bros. grossed $40 million for its first weekend of release in Canada and the United States, according to Exhibitor Relations.
It is ahead of “The Wild Robot”, a science fiction fresco from the animation studio DreamWorks, which made $18.7 million in profits from Friday to Sunday.
In this animated feature film, the robot Roz – whose English voice is played by Oscar-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o – finds herself on an uninhabited island following a typhoon. To survive, she makes friends with the animals of the forest.
In third position, we find “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice”, by Tim Burton and his kingdom of the dead with 10.3 million dollars.
At the age of 73, Michael Keaton returns to the striped costume of the sinister and prankster “bio-exorcist” trying to rally the world of the living.
The Top five is completed by Paramount’s “Transformers: The Beginning,” which earned $5.3 million, followed by Universal’s “Don’t Say Anything,” with $2.8 million.
