The film was a huge international success. For a production budget estimated at $55 million, Forrest Gump grossed nearly $680 million at the worldwide box office. In France, it achieved excellent results with almost 4 million entries. The film industry and academies have also recognized this film for its true value. Forrest Gump won 6 Oscars: Best Picture, Best Director (Robert Zemeckis), Best Actor (Tom Hanks), Best Adapted Screenplay (Eric Roth), Best Editing (Arthur Schmidt) and Best visual effects (Ken Ralston and George Murphy).

In 2011, the film was selected by the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress for preservation. The NFR deemed the film to be “of culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant interest”. It is therefore alongside feature films such as The Silence of the Lambs (1991) by Jonathan Demme, Bambi (1942) by David D. Hand or even Settling of accounts (1953) by Fritz Lang.
