24 years later, we return to the arena!

24 years after the first part, Gladiator returns to our screens on November 13. Having become one of the most notable films of the 2000s, Ridley Scott’s work won a number of awards at the time, including best film in 2001, as well as Best Actor for Russell Crowe, who plays the main character Maximus Demimus Médius.

Gladiator 2 therefore marks a new chapter, with Ridley Scott once again at the helmaccompanied by a good range of well-known actors, such as Pedro Pascal, Denzel Washington, Paul Mescal (who plays the main role) and Connie Nielsen (who returns to reprise the role of Lucila).

This opus takes place years after the death of the hero Maximus. Lucius, nephews of the former emperor and son of Maximus (it’s now official)is in turn forced to enter the Colosseum when his country is conquered by tyrannical emperors.

A complicated project

However, although the film arouses great expectations, this second part is not necessarily viewed favorably. For some, the first film stood on its own. In addition, the project had a complicated journey. It was already in the works after the success of the first episode, it was finally in 2018 that Gladiator 2 would be announced following the acquisition of the rights by Paramount.

Filming will not be a pleasure, moreover, because of the actors’ strike (July 14, 2023). We also talk about animal abuse, accidents or several people injured, as on June 7, 2024 :

An accident occurred during the filming of a stunt on the set of the Gladiator sequel, during which several people were injured, but their lives were not in danger. 4 people were subsequently hospitalized following burns. We could therefore qualify Gladiator 2 as a “cursed project”. However, the other problem that could lead to the film’s downfall would be its budget, which has exploded and is estimated at $310 million. This is huge compared to the initial budget of 165 million. For now, only time will tell us if Gladiator 2 will succeed in convincing the public.
