Who said that superhero movies were only the preserve of Americans and Marvel? In 2021, Philippe Lacheau and his gang at Fifi are tackling the genre (in their own way) with Superhero in spite of himself. This Thursday, September 26, 2024 at 9:25 p.m., TMC broadcasts How I Became a Superheroanother superhero production made in Francereleased directly on the Netflix platform, and adapted from the novel of the same name by Gérald Bronner. The plot takes place in a where superheroes live, sometimes like stars, in the company of humans without powers. Lieutenant Moreau, played by Pio Marmaï, a disillusioned police officer, sees his life turned upside down overnight when he is tasked with investigating alongside Lieutenant Schaltzmann, a series of crimes committed by people with superpowers.

I had a crush“: how did the idea for this French superhero film come about?

At the helm of this French superhero film is a certain Douglas Attal, whose directorial debut this is. In the press kit, he talks about the genesis of his project and talks about his desire to adapt Gérald Bronner’s novel, a real favorite! When I read Gérald Bronner’s novel How I Became a Superhero ten years ago, I fell in love with it. And I thought that there was material here to make a film that could be both intrinsically French and tackle the superhero genre head-on. […] What really caught my attention in the novel was this question: in a world where superheroes are everywhere but where we no longer pay attention to them, how do we find heroism and marvel at superpowers?“.

You really have to be ready and hang in there” : Pio Marmaï recounts his filming experience

The main star of the film, Pio Marmaï, did not hide his ambition to go and explore “a spectacular cinema“. “We are taken by the images and we can have fun”, as he explains in the press kit. A filming experience that turned out to be unique and totally new for the actor: “We had many meetings to manage before filming: meetings for fights, flights, falls, guns. […]you arrive at 8am with guys who suddenly propel you fifteen metres high in a second; these are things I wasn’t used to. So at 8am, you arrive and you see a 35-metre crane in the middle of a stadium with a huge crowd around it. You really have to be ready and hang on…“, remembers Pio Marmaï for whom How I Became a Superhero made it possible to achieve a “childhood dream”.
