While he is one of the greatest masters of horror, Stephen King’s favorite film is not in this genre. On the contrary, it is an adaptation of a French novel that some call a remake, much to the dismay of its director.

It’s hard to find a more prolific writer than Stephen King. At 76, the American author has written more than 65 novels throughout his career, many of which have been adapted for the big or small screen.. It, The Mist, Misery, Christine, The Shawshank Redemption or of course The Shining, most of his books are horror and give rise to films of the same genre. However, Despite its tendency towards this kind of story, Stephen King’s favorite feature film is not even in the scare register.. Better, it is adapted from a French novel from 1949! Some consider it a remake, but that is subject to debate…

“This may surprise you.”

In an interview with the British Film Institute, Stephen King has revealed his list of favorite movies. Surprisingly, the first one is not a horror feature, but was directed by a filmmaker known for that: William Friedkin, famous for The Exorcist. However, this film does not appear in the list, but another production of this director reigns at the top of the writer’s ranking. Stephen King explains:

My favorite film of all time—this may surprise you—is Sorcerer, William Friedkin’s remake of Henri-Georges Clouzot’s great film. Some will say that Clouzot’s film is better; I disagree.

Released in 1977, The film follows the adventures of four foreigners of different nationalities, each wanted in their own country, who team up to drive a load of nitroglycerin through the South American jungle.. What they don’t know is that this journey will lead them into the heart of darkness.

Remake or new adaptation?

While Stephen King considers Sorcerer to be a remake of Henri-Georges Clouzot’s film, its director does not agree with this designation. For William Friedkin, Sorcerer is above all a new adaptation of the book that inspired it, namely The Wages of Fear by Georges Arnaud published in 1949.. However, one thing is certain, is that these two films tell the same story and even if it is not horrific, the atmosphere is not always warm…
