In 1982, fans of Louis de Funes discover in theaters The Gendarme and the Gendarmettessixth and final part of the saga The Gendarme. After several years of embodying Ludovic Cruchotthe superstar of French cinema bows out in this role which is among the most emblematic of his career. This final episode introduces new characters who, as its name suggests, are Gendarmettes.
We thus become acquainted with Marianne Bonnet (Babeth Etienne), from Christine Rocourt (Catherine Serre), fromIsabelle Leroy (Sophie Michaud) and I Macumba (Nicaise Jean-Louis). Coming from Africa, the latter is none other than the daughter of Léopold Macumba, president of Boungawa in the film.
What happens to Nicaise Jean-Louis in the film? The Gendarme and the Gendarmettes ?
To lend his features to the character of Yo Macumba, the production of the feature film The Gendarme and the Gendarmettes appeals to the model Nicaise Jean-Louis. Interviewed by RCI in February 2024, the main interested party recounted how she joined the cast of the film starring Louis de Funès.
“He was the one who chose me. I was a haute couture model, I was doing a fashion show at Carven, the first fashion house to dress the stewardesses already Air France, and then other companies. And Louis de Funès wanted Carven to make the uniforms for the gendarmettes and for him. And he came to see the collection with the producer, and his wife and they were sitting in the living room. I arrived on the podium. He turned to Bétou and said, ‘I found my gendarmette!’ » remembers Nicaise Jean-Louis.
This was not Nicaise Jean-Louis’ first experience as an actress, since three years earlier she had been appeared in another cult cinema saga: James Bond. In fact, she lends her features to a daughter of Drax in the movie Moonraker released in 1979 and starring Roger Moore.

Subsequently, the interpreter of Yo Macumba in The Gendarme did not pursue a career on screen and chose to devote herself to her career as a model. As she tells RCI, she practiced this profession from the age of 29 to 59.
In October 2023, Nicaise Jean-Louis gave an interview to Alois Robinard, president of the association In the Footsteps of Louis de Funès at the Cellar. This interview was posted on the association’s YouTube channel and thus allows fans of the films The Gendarme to discover what the iconic Yo Macumba looks like today.
