Steven Spielberg is undoubtedly one of the greatest directors in the world, and yet not all of his films have been universally acclaimed. At least, that’s what emerges from Hook, released in 1991.

Peter Pan seen by Spielberg

Released in 1991, “Hook or the Revenge of Captain Hook” is one of the many films directed by Steven Spielberg. Its great originality was to revisit the tale of Peter Pan, played for the occasion by Robin Williams: here, Peter has decided to return to the real world, growing old, getting married and even becoming the father of two children. But when Captain Hook (Dustin Hoffman) returns to kidnap them, Peter must return to Neverland with Tinker Bell (Julia Roberts).

With a budget of $70 million, Hook will have grossed $300 million at the international box office. Better yet, The fantasy film received five Oscar nominations and quickly became a cult film for many. : we can particularly salute a soundtrack by the great John Williams, the man behind the music for Star Wars and Harry Potter, but also many films directed by Spielberg (Jaws, ET the Extra-Terrestrial, Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park, etc.).

An average of 29% on Rotten Tomatoes

Despite his status as a cinematic legend, Hook is, however, Steven Spielberg’s lowest-rated film on Rotten Tomatoes with an average of 29%. “A terribly uneven version” admit the Chicago Tribune ; “a painful and treacherous adventure”concludes El Pais; “As heavy as Captain Hook’s immobile and ornate ship, this sumptuous and elaborate production eventually collapses under its own weight”even TV Guide says. It should be noted that Julia Roberts was nominated for a Razzie Award in 1992 for her performance as Tinkerbell.a ceremony electing the worst actors of the year.

On the other hand, when we move away from criticism, the verdict is quite different since Hook has an average of 76% on Rotten Tomatoes from over 250,000 reviews. Which means that the film really appealed to the public… and that’s ultimately the most important thing.
