After the success of LonglegsOz Perkins returns with The Monkeyan adaptation of Stephen King whose latest trailer promises a horrific spectacle full of hemoglobin.
A true rising star in horror, Osgood “Oz” Perkins first stood out with his rereading of the Brothers Grimm tale Gretel & Hansel in 2020. But it is especially with Longlegs that he truly shone. Worn by a Nicolas Cage in great shape, Longlegs was able to count on a communication campaign that was as twisted as it was clever and was able to offer a disconcerting approach to the thriller.
In 2025, Perkins is not slowing down and is proposing two new projects: the mysterious Keeper and the adaptation of one of Stephen King's most terrifying short stories, entitled The Monkey in French, produced by James Wan. After some sadistic teasers for The Monkeythe film now delivers a murderous and bloody trailer.
The Monkey business
The trailer immediately sets the tone, with an oppressive atmosphere, and a succession of deaths accompanied by enormous showers of blood. The trailer also shows a mixture of horror and black humor, which suggests a fairly grand-guignolesque approach. A change of tone from Longlegs which Oz Perkins also confirmed on the podcast microphone Boo Crew :
-“It will be more like Misery, Creepshow, Gremlins or Werewolf of London. It won't look like Longlegs at all. In my opinion, if you're making a movie about a toy monkey, you can be serious, but a lot of King's short story is funny and nostalgic. We tried to make a film that was more reminiscent of the late 80s and 90s. It's a bit like if Robert Zemeckis took a little acid and made a Stephen King movie about a monkey in plush.«
The story of The Monkey follows twins, Bill and Hal, who discover an old toy in the attic of their childhood home: a mechanical monkey with cymbals. Soon, a series of gruesome deaths occurs around them, and it becomes clear that these deaths are due to a curse linked to this sinister object.
The film will star Theo James in the dual role of brothers Bill and Hal. He will be accompanied by Elijah Wood, Tatiana Maslany (She-Hulk), Colin O’Brien (Wonka), Rohan Campbell (Halloween Ends) and Sarah Levy (Welcome to Schitt's Creek).
The Monkey of Oz Perkins will arrive on February 19, 2025 in French cinemas.
