Whether or not we are attached to Alien : RomulusFede Álvarez’s film will have its sequel. And the director promises us something new.
With Alien: RomulusFede Alvarez had set himself a similar challenge with what he had already done with his Evil Dead of 2013. That is to say, paying homage to the classics of the saga, by evoking all the films (and even video games, with Alien: Isolation). A generous mixture which nevertheless gave birth to a work that divides a lot. Because if some were really carried away by the approach or appreciated the aesthetic qualities ofAlien: Romulusothers have completely missed it.
More than ever, fans of the franchise today find themselves split into several camps (the courageous defenders of Covenantenthusiasts of Romulus and those who find that nothing good has been done since Isolation). Even on Large Screen, opinions differ widely. Fede Álvarez’s fan service certainly did not help create unanimity, quite the contrary. Fortunately, the nostalgic and bloody museum of the filmmaker no longer seems to be on the agenda for the future.
Rebus and Romulus
In an interview for EmpireFede Álvarez spoke about the continuation ofAlien: Romulus which is already in gestation:
« Shows [Sayagues, co-scénariste] and I are working on it right now. We are excited about the new possibilities. With Romulus, we checked almost all the boxes of what I wanted to see and revisited a lot of long-forgotten elements. Now we can explore new territories. »
The filmmaker readily admits that the ambition of Romulus was not to reinvent the saga. Between homage and resurrection of the first films, Álvarez hoped to put the horror franchise back on very familiar rails. But now that it’s done (and with a certain success), he says he’s ready to move beyond all that and head towards new horizons.
A brand new Alien
« I think it would be fascinating to accompany characters you already know to places never seen before in the Alien universe, to discover new things. […] The mistake with sequels is often doing them just because you can. With the success of Romulus, we clearly have this possibility. But I will only do it if we have a great idea.«
It’s all a bit blurry. We already know that Alien: Romulus should have a sequel, but on the other hand, Álvarez says he’s not sure he’ll follow through if he doesn’t find the good idea… Let’s hope that the filmmaker follows well a clear courseand which does not lead to a simple recycling of what he liked in others or to an abandonment of the project. It would be a shame if he missed such a great opportunity to prove to his detractors that he is capable d’innover.
Finally, if the future ofAlien will perhaps play out with this sequel, the franchise is preparing very soon to explore new avenues with the series Alien: Earth by Noah Hawley (Fargo, Legion). Indeed, for the first time (if we forget the Alien VS Predator), the saga will confront humans with xenomorphs on our good old planet Earth.
With Hawley at the helm, we want to hope for a nice surprise. While waiting for the potential sequel to Romulusso we will just have to wait from here this summer 2025 on Disney+ to get our space monster fix. Fingers crossed that this new version finally gets everyone in agreement.
