If you were hoping for a sequel to The Substanceit’s a failure: Coralie Fargeat doesn’t want to hear about it. But that doesn’t mean there isn’t something in the works…
Given the international success of The Substance, punchy horror movie directed by the French Coralie Fargeat (who had already signed Revenge) and worn by Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley, it was to be expected that there would soon be talk of a sequel. And this, even if the end of the film does not really lend itself to extending the adventures of Elizabeth Sparkle… And besides, Coralie Fargeat doesn’t see it that way.
While Hollywood has shed tears at the speech given by Demi Moore at the Golden Globes (where she received the award for best actress in a musical or comedy film for The Substance), the director explained for her part, at the microphone of Varietythata sequel was not possible. Nor a prequel, for that matter. What to disappoint the fans? Not sure, since Coralie Fargeat took the opportunity to announce thatshe was already thinking about a new film !
The Substance: same but not the same
It’s in a video posted on Twitter on January 4 by Variety what Coralie Fargeat responded bluntly to a question that is now unavoidable in Hollywood whenever a film is successful. A sequel to The Substance is it to be expected? The director is unequivocal:
“The whole idea of the film was to bring new things. So no sequels, no prequels. […] But I will be happy to bring something new in a while.”
A sentence which suggests that instead of a substitute for The SubstanceCoralie Fargeat is rather thinking about a next film which would have nothing to do. In an interview given to the site Varietythis time, she confirmed that her priority was to maintain your style and freedom of tone who made The Substance a shock:
“It will be completely different, but still with a lot in common. I love making films that are daring and surprising, full of things you don’t expect, so that’s exactly what I’m going to do. I loved allowing myself so much freedom on [The Substance]so I’ll probably start again. That was the most incredible thing for me about this film.”
Fans of Coralie Fargeat’s cinema can rest assured, the director intends to go out once again the big game in terms of shock and extremism. On the other hand, she has not yet revealed any piece of intrigue, and for good reason, since this project is still only in the early stages. an embryonic stageand that we will have to wait some time before knowing if it will materialize, and in what way:
“At the moment, I am not negotiating anything. I’m just enjoying the present moment and resting, because I really want to start writing my next project. It’s slowly starting to settle in my head, and when things calm down, I’ll attack from there.”
It is therefore neither the desire nor the ideas that are lacking, but time and a well-deserved vacation before Coralie Fargeat gets down to writing this new film. But based on his eagerness and enthusiasm, the wait will be worth it. In the meantime, the race for the Oscars is on, and The Substance is tipped to be nominated in several categories. Announcement of nominations on January 19.
