With its latest trailer, Venom 3 has finally lifted the veil on the big baddie who will face Tom Hardy, and it’s a big name from Marvel comics.

Every time we forget him, he reminds us of himself. And since Marvel Studios won’t be returning to theaters until February 2025, Venom 3 intends to take advantage of the space to make Sony’s good days, still determined to go through with its plan (?) of a shared universe. After the combined failures of Morbius et Madame Webit would indeed be time to put some gasoline back in the engine.

In a final trailer, Venom 3 revealed a little more about the great challenge that Eddie Brock will face in what promises to be his last stand. And in addition to meeting a new symbiote in the Marvel film, he will also be confronted with a formidable opponent in the person of Knull, God and creator of the Symbiotes.

Venom 3 : let there be Knull

True to the logic of the trilogy, Venom 3alias The Last Dance (a title that is still just as stupid by the way) was found an even bigger villain than Carnageyet the reference in terms of symbiotes. After the Riot in the first opus and therefore the creature attached to the murderer Cletus Kassady, the franchise will introduce a fairly recent antagonist from Marvel comics.

Knull made his debut in Venom #3 in 2018, and happens to be the centerpiece of Donny Cates’ brilliant run dedicated to the character, who completely redefined the mythology of the symbiotes. King of the abyss born from the destruction of the sixth multiverse, awaiting the advent of the seventh, he is recruited by the Celestials to become the King in Blackan entity intended to protect the new world.

Go read Donny Cates’ run, there are symbiote dragons

Obviously, he refuses to cooperate, cutting off the head of a Celestial (which will become Knowhere, seen in the MCU a few times) and creating the first symbiote, in the form of the Necroblade sword. He subsequently creates an entire army of symbiotes, becoming their god via a hive mind. And yes, you will have understood, we are far from the idea that Venom is simply a slimy and aggressive beast.

In the arc King in BlackKnull launches a large-scale attack on Earth, determined to kill Venom, a renegade parasitized by ideals of goodness and justice. Needless to say, this is the most powerful opponent Eddie Brock ever faced in the comics, mobilizing all the superhero forces to try to stop him. Enough to question Sony’s plan with the character.

A hell of a piece for Venom

What plan for Sony?

The possible introduction of Knull could be suspected from the first images of Venom 3featuring a coming invasion of Earth by an army of symbiotes (Klyntar for short). But the latest trailer for the film directly confirmed it, even giving us a first (slight) glimpse of this new antagonist.

A news that has something to say considerably raise the stakes of this third opussupposedly the last with Tom Hardy in the title role. Nearly immortal, Knull seems to be far too great a threat for Venom alone. If Sony’s famous SSU were functional, one would even be tempted to say thathe could perfectly play the role of Thanos in the MCUwarranting a crossover to defeat it.

A not so (k)nul(l) villain

Following the box office performance of The Last Danceone might even think thatit could be simply introduced to return in another project. But in view of the disasters Morbius et Madame Web and the studio’s chronic inability to reunite its star symbiote with Spider-Man, still on loan to the MCU, it would be unwise to count on it.

That said, for a final dance announced, Sony at least had the decency to offer Venom a villain worthy of the event. Even if it means ruining it again without any qualms, like Carnage before him… Response at the cinema from October 30, 2024.
