It was clear that 'Apocalypse Z: The beginning of the end' was going to be a hit on Prime Video. It was based on a highly successful novel by Manel Loureiro, which started as an idea on a blog and soon generated a couple of sequels. They are indisputable milestones of zombie fiction in Spanish, but above all they have proven to be capable of hooking millions of readers with a unique and addictive plot.
And this is what has happened with the first of its adaptations, a film for the Amazon platform that has become the most viewed international original film in Prime Video history. Already in its first weekend it was number 1 in the Top 10 of countries such as the USA, the United Kingdom, Germany and France. All of this has led to the announcement of a sequel that will continue to exploit the universe of Manel Loureiro, it is possible to think that facing the second novel in the series, 'The Dark Days'.
'The Beginning of the End' tells how a strange disease similar to rabies spreads throughout the planet, transforming people into extremely aggressive creatures. Our protagonist has not yet gotten over the loss of his wife in an accident, and he has been depressed and isolated for a year, with his cat as his only company. When the plague gains strength, his sister asks him to join her in the Canary Islands, which will lead him to embark on a journey full of dangers and with unexpected travel companions.
The film starts as a kind of portrait of everyday life during the apocalypse, in the 'I Am Legend' style, and then takes on an episodic structure that suggests that a serial structure would have been good, rather than this final commitment to the feature film. None of this prevents us from being faced with an interesting commitment to fantasy in Spain, and whose well-deserved international recognition shows that the genre made here continues to be of interest far beyond our borders.
