This week, Superman fans were delighted to discover images from the first DCU film directed by James Gunn. The trailer was released this Thursday and the least we can say is that this feature film will have the heavy task of setting up a number of characters and plots from the comics. One of the fears of some spectators is to see a very long version of the film arrive. Rest assured, James Gunn has just revealed the maximum duration he has planned for Superman.
Fans concerned about the length of Gunn's Superman
Superman by James Gunn is expected in our cinemas for next summer. In this new adventure of the superhero from Krypton, it is David Corenswet who will don the famous costume and succeed Henry Cavill. He will play alongside Rachel Brosnahan who plays Lois Lane. Fans were able to notice in the trailer the presence of Nathan Fillion who plays Guy Gardner. The director of Guardians of the Galaxy also planned tointegrate many characters from the Superman universe. We know that there will be Hawkgirl, Mr. Terrific or even Metamorpho to name a few. So, theone of the fans' concerns is ending up with a production of XXL duration.
As a reminder, the film Superman directed by Richard Donner released in 1978 as well as Man of Steel they Zack Snyder both have the same duration, namely 143 minutes or 2 hours and 23 minutes. Bryan Singer decided to lengthen his film a little Superman Returns adding a few extra minutes to reach 154 minutes or 2 hours and 34 minutes. So the question is know if James Gunn will follow the trend regarding these durations or if he will propose a longer film.
James Gunn reassures fans, Superman will not be in an XXL version
Imagine that the filmmaker who has the difficult task of overhauling the DCU answered the question during a conference to announce the trailer for Superman who broke this record. James Gunn has confirmed that the length of his film will be “much less than three hours…less than two and a half hours“. On his Threads account on which he does not hesitate to exchange and deliver indiscretions to fans, Gunn recalled this information but without specifying the exact duration, the film being still in post-production.

– It's not finished yet so I don't know. Less than two and a half hours.”
It is therefore a safe bet that James Gunn plans a length for his film that is around those of Donner and Snyder because it actually corresponds to less than 3 hours and 2h30. But from here the exit of Superman scheduled for July 11, 2025, we should have more details.
