The difficulties facing the world of agriculture and the peasantry have in recent years been the subject of numerous documentaries (Silent revolution2016, The Bertrand Farm2024) and fiction (Little Peasant2017; In the name of the earth2019). For her first feature film, Louise Courvoisier, born in the French Jura 30 years ago, chose to be part of this heritage but by taking a step aside. While taking place in this universe where the present is wavering and the future is even more uncertain, Twenty Gods – which won honors at the Cannes Film Festival – uses the means of comedy to tell the story of a young man suddenly faced with his responsibilities.
We discover Totone, 18 years old, in the middle of a drinking session during a village festival. A girl takes him home, but he breaks down… A high alcohol party later, her father kills himself at the wheel of his car. Here is Totone suddenly having to (try to) take responsibility in order to take care of his little sister and earn his living. Learning that the gold medal for the best county comes with a bonus of 30,000 euros, he sets out to make a wheel of superlatives, while knowing nothing about cheese making.
