In the world of cinema, certain directors are particularly appreciated around the world. However, this is not always enough to guarantee success. This is, for example, what Francis Ford Coppola proved with his last film, a real flop. But he could well come back with an unexpected project…

Megalopolis, Francis Ford Coppola's latest flop

There are directors whose names are known absolutely everywhere around the world. This is for example the case of Steven Spielberg, Christopher Nolan or Tim Burton. But even prestige of this magnitude is not always enough to convince enough spectators to head to cinemas. Lately it's Francis Ford Coppola who paid the price with Megalopolis. With an estimated budget of 130 million dollars and revenues peaking at 13 million dollars, there is no doubt: the latest film by this great director is an authentic flop.

It must be said that it had already not convinced many people at the time of its first screening at the Film Festival. However, it still offered an attractive cast including Adam Driver, Giancarlo Esposito, Nathalie Emmanuel, Aubrey Plaza and Shia LaBeouf. Unfortunately, it was not enough to save the film which is added to the long list of disappointments for the director whose last real success dates back to 1997 for the film The Idealist with Matt Damon.

A musical comedy to save the filmmaker?

While other prestigious directors like Ridley Scott and Clint Eastwood continue to release films that are popular with audiences even today, one would think that at 85 years old and after so many failures, Francis Ford Coppola would eventually retire. If we believe the Washington Post however, the reality should be very different. Indeed, the American director has already started working on his next film: Glimpses of the Moon. Like Megalopolis it should be mainly self-financed, and its filming is scheduled for early 2025.

But then, what to expect for this famous Glimpses of the Moon? According to Coppola himself, it should be a “strange 1930s-style musical”. The story would be inspired by the film This sacred truth released in 1937, which chronicled the lives of several married couples who separate before realizing that it may be more difficult than expected. Recently, musicals Joker Folie à Deux et Wicked proved that the genre was as capable of attracting people as it was of repelling them. We hope for Francis Ford Coppola that his next film will be closer to the success of Wicked what du flop Joker 2.
