This moving thriller is coming to Prime Video. You won't be surprised to see Liam Neeson in the lead, the essential actor for this type of production. After a discreet release in theaters, the feature film is getting a second chance on the Amazon streaming platform.

Absolutely Neeson

Directed by Hans Petter Moland, Absolution marks a new collaboration with Liam Neeson after Sang froid (2019). This dramatic and introspective film, filmed mainly in Massachusetts in 2022, was produced for an estimated budget of $30 million. But it generated only 3 million at the worldwide box office, a disappointing score offset by a release on Amazon Prime Video. Liam Neeson shares the screen with Ron Perlman and Frankie Shaw, actors known respectively for Hellboy et Mr.Robot. Despite mixed reviews, the film has managed to arouse at least the curiosity of those who wish to discover a new story with, as the main actor, the famous Irish actor.

Strangely melancholy for an action film

Thug, an aging former henchman, desperately tries to redeem himself. Faced with a damning medical diagnosis, he seeks to reconnect with his family, particularly his daughter and grandson, while taking risks to redeem his conscience after living a gangster's life. On Rotten Tomatoes, Absolution gets a critical score of 52%. Critics praised Neeson's performance, although the film was considered uneven.

Roger Ebert emphasizes that the scenario is “a cross between all of Neeson's action films”, but recognizes a certain finesse in the family relationships addressed. Liam Neeson delivers these themes with a “melancholic” approach, a touch that we find in quite a few crime films in which he participates. In his criticism, The Hollywood Reporter also notes a curious mix between “violent actions and melancholy undertow”. However, some deplore that the director's artistic ambitions are limited by an overly simplistic plot. Absolution still succeeds in intriguing fans of dark and introspective dramas.

If you're looking for some good old “Liam Neeson,” there's some in Absolution. The actor is also very grateful to Hans Petter Moland: “I am 72 years old. They still send me scripts to do. In some, I type guys (…) I feel privileged and really honored to receive these scripts, and sometimes, to get very good ones. Absolution can be seen now on Amazon Prime Video.
