The end-of-year holidays are the ideal time to share a good film with the family, cozy in front of the television. Here is a selection of 5 films to see or rewatch so that the magic happens again.
Frozen – Disney+
In 2013, “Frozen” made the song “Liberated, delivered” ring in our ears with the adventures of Anna and Elsa in the background. The latter decides to flee after plunging the kingdom of Arendelle into eternal winter. Before her sister comes to take her out of her solitude. A story that hasn't aged a bit, and which smells like Christmas with its snowy landscapes.
A real hit at the box office, a second part was released in 2019 to become the most profitable animated film in history (it was recently dethroned by Vice-Versa 2). A third film is currently in development, with Idina Menzel and Kristen Bell returning in the lead roles in the original version. Josh Gad and Jonathan Groff are set to reprise the characters of Olaf and Kristoff.
Hotel Transylvania – CANAL+
Directed by Genndy Tartakovsky, “Hotel Transylvania” is a nugget of humor about the family struggles of Count Dracula who finds himself on the verge of despair when his only daughter, Mavis, falls in love with Johnny, an adventurer passing through Transylvania. Traumatized by the death of his wife Martha by an angry mob when Mavis was just a baby, Dracula will try everything to separate them.
Released in 2012, “Hotel Transylvania” was so successful that three sequels were released over the next nine years. The original version can count on a breathtaking cast, with Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg, Selena Gomez, Kevin James, David Spade and Steve Buscemi. In the French version, we note the presence of Alex Goude and Virginie Efira.
The Nightmare Before Christmas – Disney+
A great classic of the holiday season, Tim Burton's “The Nightmare Before Christmas” is a cinematic gem combining fantasy and musical comedy. We discover the crazy project of Jack Skellington, the “king of pumpkins” who organizes Halloween celebrations like every year. Until the day he discovers the existence of Santa Claus and the holiday that goes with it.
It's impossible to remain indifferent to this film released in 1993 which has not aged a bit. Everything comes together with astonishing fluidity, with its catchy songs in tune with the Christmas celebrations. A unique adventure that we never tire of.
The Mitchells vs. the Machines – Netflix
Released in 2021, in the middle of the Covid period, “The Mitchells against the machines” is a marvel of humor which sets the scene in the modern world. Viewers meet Katie Mitchell, a young girl passionate about cinema who dreams of joining the school of her dreams. When his father decides to take him there, the whole family embarks on a road trip which takes an unexpected turn when a computer program takes over.
Michael Rianda's first feature film, “The Mitchells Against the Machines” is an animated film full of humor where the dialogues and gags follow one another at a frantic pace. The social criticism of a world dependent on new technologies and connected phones is absolutely delicious.
Santa and Co. – Netflix
In 2017, Alain Chabat wrote the screenplay and directed “Santa & Cie”, a very French Christmas comedy in which he plays Santa Klaus. The latter is very upset the day his 92,000 elves contract a strange illness. Only vitamin C is capable of treating them. He decides to urgently go to Paris to find the medicine. But nothing is going to happen as planned.
No need to introduce Alain Chabat, whose sense of humor works wonders in all the projects he leads. “Santa & Cie” is no exception, with a story that will delight young and old alike during this winter period. Audrey Tautou, Pio Marmaï, Bruno Sanches and Golshifteh Farahani complete the cast.
