Disney returns to success. In 2023, the company celebrated its hundredth year of existence with a box office at half mast, critical and public failures as well as a clear decline in its number of Disney+ subscribers. Indiana Jones 5, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania or even Wish: Asha and the lucky starthe company stood out in a ranking that it rarely used. On the podium of the biggest failures at the cinema, the firm with big ears multiplied the entries. None of its most popular teams had managed to achieve unanimous support, from Marvel to Lucasfilm via Disney Animation. In 2024, the firm turns to its successes of yesteryear and offers a number of sequels.

Under the leadership of Bob Iger, the return to theaters after a pandemic which left scars is taking place to the rhythm of universes such as those of Vice-Versa, Deadpool et The Lion King. Deadpool & Wolverine et Vice-Versa 2 were great successes, bringing each 1.3 and 1.6 billion dollars in the world. As the end-of-year holidays approach, Disney has reason to smile again for good. As its streaming success foreshadowed, Vaiana 2 will have no trouble surpassing these already stratospheric results, despite a less enthusiastic review than expected.

Best weekend of the year 2024 in

In France, Vaiana 2 has worked miracles and has already attracted 2.3 million spectators. These results allow it to achieve the best first weekend of the year, excluding vacation periods and public holidays. It also surpasses the animation studio’s previous hits, becoming the film with the best first weekend for a Disney film, and even largely for an animated offering. Elsewhere in the world, this success is confirmed with revenues already amounting to $386 million. In Uncle Sam’s country, where the last weekend of November is among the most popular for studios, Vaiana stands out as an attendance record. He surpasses Frozen 2. Despite a relative success for the first part of her adventures, the princess of the Pacific takes advantage of a reputation forged on Disney + to attract spectators. Bob Iger was right to abandon broadcast in series form on Disney+ to focus on the cinematic experience.

Disney becomes king of the box office again

Last January, and for the first time since 2015, Disney left its place as global box office leader to Universal. Building on the success ofOppenheimer et Super Mario Brosthe film, the spinning planet largely surpassed the results of the company which, four years earlier, had a record-breaking year. In 2024, Mickey should regain his crown and see a strong comeback of these most popular licenses. At Marvel like Pixar, enthusiasm was required. The upcoming release of Mufasa should be a new occasion for the company to rejoice, the first film having achieved a staggering score upon its release in 2019.

And in 2025 then?

As December 31 approaches, Disney is already looking ahead. The company intends to continue its momentum and consolidate its leadership position with projects from all the most popular imaginations in its catalog. If Marvel played the economy in 2024, reuniting Wade Wilson and Logan was the only project promised to hit theaters, things will intensify over the coming months. February 12 is with Captain America : Brave New World that hostilities will be launched. Then, you will have to count on Thunderbolts* by Jake Schreier and which must bring together Bucky, Yelena and Red Guardian. If the projects should not have too much difficulty attracting attention, it is with its summer project that the Maison des Idées aims to do wonders. Matt Shakman, director of WandaVisionwill bring together a new generation of Fantastic Four. Vanessa Kirby, Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn and Ebon Moss-Bachrach take on the roles of Susan Storm, Red Richards, Johnny Storm and Ben Grimm.

At Disney, things may be more complicated for the live-action remake of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfswhich caused a lot of discussion before its release. Like The Little Mermaid before it, the film could suffer from strong criticism from a certain part of the public regarding the distribution choices. Then, you will have to count on Lilo & Stitch (another remake) and Eliothe latest addition to the Pixar catalog. No Star Wars on the other hand, we will have to wait until May 2026 with The Mandalorian & Grogu to rewatch the rolling credits of the iconic saga.
