Moana's new adventures may not tell much, but the very last scene hides the most important information in the film. This Wednesday, November 27, the proud explorer of Motunui made a mixed return to cinemas. If opinions differ regarding the visual quality of the feature film, a vast majority of spectators agree to say that at the level of the scenario: it's the dead sea. Vaiana 2 began its journey as a Disney+ series before being forced onto the big screen, and it shows. As in the days when the studio's sequels had no budget and were released directly on cassettes, Disney Christmas 2024 is made with the means at hand. This second part will certainly not make an impression but at least leaves room for hope for fans of the character.

A 1h40 introduction
As we said in our review: the large firm did not have great ambitions for this project… Except prepare the ground for new adventures. Vaiana 2 may not have been released in episodic format on Disney+ but its content remains the same. The film teams (who certainly didn't ask for anything and had nothing to do with it) could never have reworked the project entirely. This adventure therefore follows the typical pattern of a spin-off for a streaming platform: serve as a showcase for the original work and future productions.
On Disney+, this program would surely have hit the mark. The storyline doesn't get wet, certainly, but the final twist is there to unanimously please fans. However, when you pay for a cinema ticket, it is not to discover a 1h40 trailer with a post-credits scene as the only interest. After the least epic final battle in the studio's history, Vaiana 2 makes a revelation of the utmost importance.
By breaking the curse that held the island of Motufetu submerged, Moana also freed the Gods of the elements, including the famous Nalo. We had to wait for this extract before discovering the main antagonist of the film in the flesh, who until then was only a vague entity residing in the clouds. Funny choice to explain all the laziness of a film in its final scene, no? This story is actually just a kind of Vaiana 1.5allowing the heroine’s next “real” adventure to be set up.
In what should have been Vaiana 2 but will ultimately be Vaiana 3the adventurer of Motunui will have to ally herself with the peoples found to face the wrath of the Gods. These premises look much more promising and will certainly not fail to honor the character. And who knows: maybe Matangi will also have a chance to shine. The Bat Goddess was only given a few minutes of screen time and quickly established herself as the biggest wasted potential in Vaiana 2. To be continued!
