Released in 1986, the film Bach and Bottine enchanted a generation of children and still holds a special place in the hearts of the Quebec public. Miss Bottinean adorable rereading of the famous Tale for everyonebrings together all the qualities to become a classic of the genre.
It is indeed a little gem of a film that screenwriter Dominic James (Firm coconut) and director Yan Lanouette Turgeon (Rock Paper Scissors) with this family comedy freely inspired by Tale for everyone by André Melançon.
Car Miss Bottine is not a remake like those that Hollywood studios regularly produce by recreating almost exact copies of their old popular hits. Dominic James instead wrote a new film using only the main lines of the original work, reworking the plot and integrating new characters.
In Miss Bottinewe therefore tell the story of Philippe (Antoine Bertrand), an opera composer suffering from social anxiety who is forced to accommodate his niece Simone (Marguerite Laurence), a rebellious and eccentric orphan.
The arrival of Simone and her best friend, a skunk named Bottine, will obviously disrupt the daily life of Philippe who lives alone in an apartment in downtown Montreal. Their cohabitation will have its share of challenges, especially since Philippe is going through a period of great stress because of his delays in delivering the music for his next opera.
Warm and comforting
After the charming Coconut firm, released in 2023, screenwriter and producer Dominic James confirms his talent for writing intelligent and inspiring family films, likely to please young and old alike.
Based on a dynamic and ambitious production by Yan Lanouette Turgeon, Miss Bottine touches the heart with its delicious mix of tenderness, humor and emotions (we challenge you not to shed a tear in the last part of the film). James also managed to integrate serious subjects into the story (loneliness, social anxiety, blank page anxiety) without ever losing sight of the mission to entertain.
The success of the film also rests largely on the irresistible duo formed by Antoine Bertrand and the young Marguerite Laurence, a revelation. Antoine Bertrand offers one of the finest performances of his career in the skin of this agoraphobic musician who finally comes out of his shell, while the sparkling Marguerite Laurence bursts onto the screen with her charisma and naturalness. Their complicity and contagious energy illuminate this soft, warm and comforting film.
Miss Bottinea film by Yan Lanouette Turgeon with Antoine Bertrand, Marguerite Laurence, Marilyn Castonguay and Mani Soleymanlou. On display.
