After The Acolyte’s Laser Whip, 9 More Weird Star Wars Lightsabers

The Acolyte features a live-action laser whip, a weapon very different from what we are used to seeing in Star Wars. But in the vast universe created by George Lucas, many other laser weapons have been invented. Some are truly surprising.

For the first time, a laser whip was staged in Star Wars. More precisely, it is the first time that we see such a weapon in a live-action work. From the trailer, in May, we had spotted it. But it is at the time of the release of episode six of The Acolytebroadcast on July 3, that we were able to really admire it.

If the iconic weapon of Star Wars is the lightsaber, it is clear that there has been a lot of inventiveness in imagining variants. Some are very well-known, such as Darth Maul’s double-bladed lightsaber, which caused a sensation in episode 1 (The Phantom Menace), or that of Kylo Ren, whose two quillons also emit energy.

Other derivative weapons are a little more specialized, and less known than the previous two. We think of the black saber, presented in particular in the series The Mandalorianor the shoto lightsaber, which is a short sword, similar to the Japanese wakizashi (in addition to the classic katana).

The laser whip is highlighted in Star Wars (which was initially introduced via other works) is a good opportunity to take a quick look at other atypical weapons in the lightsaber category. The selection does not claim to be exhaustive, but focuses on the most surprising proposals, in our eyes.

Be careful, not everything is considered canon.

Articulated double-bladed lightsaber

It is a double-bladed lightsaber, like Darth Maul’s, but with each half folding into the other. A vision of Rey’s dark side features this weapon in episode 9 (L’Ascension de Skywalker).

Laser spike (or spear)

This is the equivalent of a lightsaber, except the handle is as long as a stick. This gives a sort of polearm whose tip is the energy blade.

Laser knife

The blades of a lightsaber can be more or less long. The proof is with the shoto, which is a little shorter than a classic saber. There was also the laser knife.

Double-bladed spinning lightsaber

It is actually a device that consists of assembling two lightsabers and, once connected, the device activates a rotating system that rotates the two blades along the end of the circle now formed by the assembly. The weapon is notably visible in the Obi-Wan Kenobi series.

A unique curved tear weapon used by Darth Noctyss, a Sith Lord. Instead of a straight energy tear extending outward from the hilt, the tip curves, giving it a scimitar-like appearance.

Lightsaber-blaster hybrid

It is a lightsaber whose guard has been adapted to also fire energy projectiles, like a blaster. Young Ezra Bridger made this hybrid; we see the barrel of the weapon at various times as well as the trigger that allows it to fire.

Lightsaber Rifle

The idea here is to combine a classic lightsaber with a rifle that fires energy blasts. The rifle has a special slot for the saber to be inserted, much like a magazine, on the top of the weapon. The image below shows the saber in a horizontal position.

Black Saber

It has been mentioned before, but the weapon is so unusual that it would be surprising not to re-list it here. It is sometimes called the Mandalorian lightsaber. Its particularity is to have a black blade surrounded by a luminous halo.

Parasol in the shape of a lightsaber

It’s not an official weapon, but it’s so amazing that it was only fitting to mention it. It appears in the series Visionswhich brings together independent short films from animation studios. Here, we see a parasol in the shape of a lightsaber at work.
