The Count of Monte Cristo

This is the big release this week! Literary masterpiece written by Alexandre Dumas at the end of the 19th century, Le Comte de Monte Cristo is enjoying a second youth on our big screens at the start of this summer. Between the photography, the sets and the costumes, this new film adaptation of the adventures of Edmond Dantès is a feast for the eyes.

Having just been promoted to captain of a large ship, Edmond Dantès sees his life turned upside down on his wedding day when he is wrongly arrested. Envied by those around him, he is the victim of a plot and imprisoned for ten years in the Château d’If. After managing to escape, he returns under the identity and appearance of the Count of Monte Cristo. Thirsty for revenge, Edmond Dantès intends to destroy the lives of all those who betrayed him years before.

Good that The Count of Monte Cristo lasts almost three hours, you don’t see the time passing. And for good reason: the film’s storyline is thrilling and keeps us in suspense until the last minutes. The slow revenge of Edmond Dantès is simply captivating. To give it relief, the actors are in top form. Pierre Niney is particularly good in the role of the Count of Monte Cristo.

AlloCiné spectators are enthusiastic, giving an average rating of 4.2 out of 5. The press is a little more mixed, but remains convinced, with a rating of 3.6 out of 5.

The Monk and the Gun

The Monk and the Gun takes us to 2006, when Bhutan is opening up to modernization, the Internet, television… and democracy! The inhabitants of the country of Gross National Happiness are not very motivated to go and vote, but the government is trying to make things happen. In a remote mountainous province, a monk decides to organize a mysterious ceremony on the day of the vote, and tasks one of his disciples with finding a rifle.

This feature film stands out as a gentle, funny and surprising tale. With respective scores of 3.2 (press) and 3.6 (spectators) out of 5, The Monk and the Gun has already managed to seduce many viewers. The feature film promises a nice interlude in the Himalayan ranges.

Kinds of Kindness

After the excellent Poor Creaturesreleased in French cinemas at the beginning of the year, the filmmaker Yórgos Lánthimos is already back with Kinds of Kindness. Emma Stone and Willem Dafoe are still there, to our great pleasure!

Kinds of Kindness is a triptych fable that follows three characters: a man without choices who tries to take control of his own life, a police officer very agitated by the return of his wife, missing at sea, and a woman determined to find the person destined to become a prodigious spiritual leader.

The casting of Kinds of Kindness is promising: Emma Stone (La La Land), Willem Dafoe (The Florida Project), Hunter Schafer (Euphoria), Jesse Plemons (Breaking Bad), Margaret Qualley (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood), Mamoudou Athie (Jurassic World: The World After) and Joe Alwyn (A Day in the Life of Billy Lynn).

According to critics, Kinds of Kindness definitely off the beaten track. True to himself, the filmmaker offers a disturbing, but very funny feature film, despite an uneven result. The staging and the performance of the actors are greatly praised.
