Furiosa at the box office is still not doing well. The film with Anya Taylor-Joy is experiencing a serious slowdown.

Furiosa, still a flop

It’s still more official, Furiosa is indeed a flop. The spin-off of the Mad Max saga which focuses on the solo epic of the character of Anya Taylor-Joy just recorded an estimated $5.3 million this weekend on 15,285 screens in 78 foreign markets, marking a serious slowdown at the box office. The film’s foreign total now stands at $97 million, with worldwide receipts climbing to $160.1 million.. However, it is not the critics that are lacking in it, with Furiosa grabbing an attractive score of 90% on Rotten Tomatoes. It is also the audience which validates the film 90%.

We salute its epic story, its philosophical speeches and the performance of its main actors. But perhaps the absence of the iconic character from the saga contributed to his poor performance. In addition to the absence of Tom Hardy in the role of Mad Max, we can cite as other possible factors in the failure a post-apocalyptic universe already seen and revised or a high budget which may not be amortized. This fifth episode, however, came, with all the ambitions in the world, to reveal the story of Furiosa, a mysterious and charismatic character whose life was turned upside down when she was torn from her native land by a troop of disreputable bikers.

And then ?

Compared to the $380 million collected by Fury Road in 2015, the amounts collected by Furiosa therefore seem very meager. This commercial failure calls into question the future of the franchise, as George Miller himself pointed out during the Cannes Film Festival: “I’ll wait to see if Furiosa works before jumping into the sequel.“. However, the film received excellent reviews and even Warner Bros., despite the box office disappointment, seems satisfied with this positive reception. The future of the Mad Max saga therefore remains uncertain. The decision to continue the franchise will undoubtedly depend on discussions between the studio and George Miller, who is known to have a desire to continue exploring the Mad Max universe.
