Claire Simon and childhood

In Learndocumentary presented at the Cannes Film Festival in a special screening, Claire Simon returns to a theme that she had already explored in Recreation : school. In her new film, this time she is interested in the links between students and teacher, which she finds particularly touching. “I wanted to make this documentary about elementary school because that’s the time when children learn to obey, learn to try to be like adults. I then went up to the classrooms and I was convinced that there was no telling this place. I was wrong, I was overwhelmed by what I saw, especially by this desire to learn”. For the director who is particularly interested in childhood, it “It is extraordinarily beautiful to see on their faces the feelings that appear, the freedom of thought, the intelligence”.

A message of love for teachers

In this portrait of the Anton Makarenko Elementary School, the teachers are obviously at the heart of the documentary. “I was very impressed by their commitment and their will. It’s easy to say that I think it’s great, they’re the ones there every morning. They are the ones who make civilization, who allow children to have the language of society, to be able to be our future. The school is the place that creates the city around it.” Claire Simon also studied ethology. For her, this discipline is intrinsically linked to cinema: “good cinema tells how men write civilization. Cinema is ethnology”.
