Barbarella is a science fiction film dating from 1968: imagine that it would soon be the subject of a remake by director Edgar Wright… and with Sydney Sweeney in the title role.

Back in space

Basically, Barbarella is a comic strip by Jean-Claude Forest, created in 1962. Its heroine, clearly inspired by the icon Brigitte Bardot, explores the planets in the year 40,000, meets extraterrestrials and has some rather sparkling adventures. – for example, she experiments with the orgasmotron, a strange machine that lives up to its name. The comic was adapted for film in 1968: Franco-Italian, it was directed by Roger Vadim and cast Jane Fonda as its famous heroine.

A cult film if ever there was one, whose aura is still present today and which is of fierce interest to Hollywood: a remake was in fact planned and the Hollywood Reporter has just admitted that Edgar Wright was presumed to direct it. As a reminder, Wright is a distinguished filmmaker: we owe him great classics like Shauf of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, The Last Pub Before the End of the World, Scott Pilgrim, Baby Driver and Last Night in Soho. And inevitably, this is enough to arouse curiosity.

To succeed the legendary Jane Fonda, it was Sydney Sweeney who was chosen. The star of Euphoria, who we recently also saw in The White Lotus, Madame Web or The Handmaid’s Tale, is clearly one of Hollywood’s rising stars and one of the most bankable faces of the moment.

Another detail and not the least: this remake of Barbarella would be written by Jane Goldman, English screenwriter who has already signed numerous blockbusters such as X-Men The Beginning, X-Men Days of Future Past or the Kingsman. With her, Honey Ross, American screenwriter.

In short, we will still wait for confirmation from Edward Wright as director, but in any case the matter seems well on its way to success: there is something to be curious about, yes.
