Sonic, the favorite hedgehog of young and old, arrives on Netflix with the live action film starring James Marsden and Jim Carrey.

Netflix is ​​offering us a new family get-together, with the arrival of the Sonic film in the catalog on May 15. Released in 2021, this live action version follows the world’s fastest blue hedgehog to Earth, his new home. Sonic and his new best friend Tom (James Marsden) team up to save the planet from the evil Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey), determined to rule the entire world.

With more than 2 million entries in , this video game character who has spanned the ages has won over young and old alike and even got a sequel two years later. A third part, which will feature for the first time Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Shadow, the best-known heroes of the video game universe, is expected at the end of the year.

But the success of Sonic would surely not have been the same if the studios had not reversed course on a particularly important subject: the design of the blue hedgehog.

The face of discord

To understand what we’re talking about, we have to go back to April 2019. Paramount unveils the first images of its Sonic film, hoping to satisfy fans of the video games. But the opposite is happening.

The trailer visible on Youtube receives a record number of “red thumbs”, the comments point out the look of the hedgehog which they consider sloppy, awkward because too humanoid, and not faithful enough to the video games. Faced with this outcry, director Jeff Fowler decided to backtrack and apologize. He and his team return to work to better satisfy the public:

“Thank you for your support. And for your criticism. The message could not be clearer… you are not satisfied with the design and you want changes. You will have them. All the teams at Paramount and Sega are are fully committed to getting the BEST possible version of this character…”

To achieve this, the Paramount studio agrees to inject an additional 5 million dollars in order to start from scratch and completely redo the look of the blue hedgehog. This will raise the film’s budget to 90 million greenbacks, which will fortunately be quickly profitable…
