In Pinocchio: Carved from Darkness, director Joona Tena completely changes the nature of the puppet created by Carlo Collodi in 1881 and popularized by Disney in the 1940 animated film of the same name. “This dark adaptation of Carlo Collodi’s classic tale sees Geppetto carve a puppet resembling his recently deceased son from a block of wood discarded at a crime scene and cursed by Agatha, the priestess of a demonic sectexplains the filmmaker in Variety. As Pinocchio transforms into a vengeful killer, a teenager named Charlie and his mother Nancy arrive in town looking for a fresh start. Meanwhile, Detective Georgina begins to investigate Agatha’s crimes. The characters intersect, with tragic consequences.”

In the role of Gepetto, we will find Peter Stormare (Constantine, John Wick 2), in that of the alcoholic mother Vicki Berlin (Triangle of Sadness) and in that of a small strike which perverts Charlie Daniel Nuta (Watcher). Filming is due to begin early next year, for a theatrical release in summer 2025.

“We use the premises of the classic tale to make a modern and dark horror film, but also poignant and empathetic, because our Pinocchio is carved from evil but nourished by affectionconcludes the director. It will be a gripping cinematic journey through fear, while tackling themes of grief and broken family bonds.”

Given the first image released, nightmares seem guaranteed.
