After Midnight Mass, Mike Flanagan will direct the sequel to this terrifying horror film

Mike Flanagan is a renowned director in the world of horror and horror. He has already proven himself in this area on numerous occasions. Recently, we just learned that the American filmmaker was taking over the direction of this cult franchise.

Who is Mike Flanagan?

Since the beginning of the 2010s, Mike Flanagan launched into the production of horror productions for the small and big screen. He tried his hand in 2011 with Absentia, a first attempt relatively poorly received by the public. In fact, it is especially on the small screen that the filmmaker has most impressed his audience. In fact, he achieved for Netflix three horror series which have met with certain success: The Haunting of Hill House (2018), The Haunting of Bly Manor (2020) and The Fall of the House of Usher (2023).

At the head of this great franchise

Recently, according to Jeff Sneider and Deadline, Mike Flanagan could be the director of the next part of the saga The Exorcist. Indeed, in 2023, the filmmaker David Gordon Green is responsible for issuing the license The Exorcist up to date. The director takes his recipe from his trilogy Halloween by proposing a first part, The Exorcist – Devotionwhose events take place just after the plot of the first film, despite the decades that separate the two works. Like with Halloween (2018), David Gordon Green ignored the countless sequels, to return to the plot from its origins, just after the events of the film William Friedkin.

Unfortunately, unlike his trilogy Halloween, The Exorcist – Devotion was shot down by professional critics and the public. The feature film has an average of 1.9 on AlloCiné and only reported $136 million of box office revenue. A critical and financial failure which undermines the rest of the saga. Indeed, as with Halloween, David Gordon Green was to direct a trilogy. But faced with the failure of Devotion, Universal Studios seems to have changed its tune, by hiring Mike Flanagan to take over the saga and bring it back on track. So, good or bad decision?
