It’s hard to say which superhero would be the most popular of all, but we can’t deny that Batman would be a serious contender. Among the most memorable adaptations, we of course remember Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight saga. But did you know there was actually a fourth movie?

An unbeatable saga?

Whatever your age, if you like superheroes even a little bit, you’ve probably already read, watched or played something labeled Batman. Since its origins, the DC Comics character has gone through many different interpretations, from the slightly ridiculous and amusing version to the cliché of the vigilante being darker than the darkest character. But recently, if there is one version that has received unanimous support, it is that of Christopher Nolan. In 2005, the British-American director tried his hand at a superhero film by producing Batman Begins with Christian Bale in the role of the vigilante. A few years later, in 2008, it was especially with its sequel that the public was delighted: the famous The Dark Knight.

It must be said that the latter had something to please. Between the flawless interpretation of Christian Bale and the absolutely historic one of the late Heath Ledger in the role of the Joker, the film chained legendary scenes in a dark and visually stunning Gotham. Today, and despite a slightly disappointing third episode, The Dark Knight saga is considered one of the best adaptations of the world’s greatest detective to cinema and above all collected more than 2.5 billion dollars at the worldwide box office, a real success.

Another movie you’ve never seen

Since the end of The Dark Knight saga, many are still waiting to find such an impactful Batman. Some will say they got what they wanted with The Batman in 2022 thanks to the very successful interpretation of Robert Pattinson, but others still swear by Christopher Nolan’s trilogy, and have surely made up their minds. Yet even they may not know that it exists a fourth film to this legendary saga. His name is Batman: Gotham Tales (Batman Gotham Knight in original version), and he is indeed canon to this universe.

Released a few days before The Dark Knight in 2008, Batman: Gotham Tales is in fact a series of several animated short films which, taken end to end, last 75 minutes. Since they are all linked by a real common thread, they can very well be watched without interruption to make a real film. Their stories unfold elsewhere entre Batman Begins et The Dark Knight and allow the character of Batman to develop as he begins his life as a vigilante in Gotham. He then meets some mythical villains from the comics like Killer Croc or Deadshotand we even have the opportunity to see this dear Scarecrow. This production is primarily animated by Japanese studios, but their scripts were written by American teams and especially by David S. Goyerco-author of Nolan’s cinema trilogy. Note, however, that even if these are the same characters and the same universe, the Batman of these short films is not voiced by Christian Bale but by the late Kevin Conroywho lent his voice to the character in numerous adaptations. If you’re one of those people who’ve never moved on since The Dark Knight Rises ended and you’ve never watched Batman: Tales of Gotham, you know what to do!
