Born December 20, 1961 in Shreveport, Louisiana, Freddie Spencer, nicknamed “Fast Freddie,” is an American motorcycle racing legend, considered one of the most talented riders of the 1980s, if not in the history of the motorcycle sport thanks to his exploit in 1985.
Having trained in dirt track then in his national 250cc speed championship, Freddie Spencer quickly gained attention and was drafted into the Honda AMA Superbike team at the age of 18. He scored a few victories there and, the following year, even participated in the development of the exotic NR500 with oblong pistons. In 1982, he completed his first full season in Grand Prix on the 3-cylinder NS500, during which he became at the age of 20 the youngest winner in the history of the premier category by winning at Spa, then in 1983 he became the youngest 500 World Champion after a fierce fight with
Kenny Roberts ! These two records will hold for almost thirty years, before being beaten by Marc Marquez
in 2013.
1984 will be marked by mechanical problems with the NSR500 V4 and injuries, but his moment of glory came in 1985 when he achieved a unique feat: winning the world championships in two categories, the 500cc and the 250cc, during the same season. This remains an unrivaled record, testament to his versatility and endurance.
He would declare years later: “I had a 3-year contract with Honda and as I had promised to win 3 titles, but I had missed the one in 1984, my only possibility was to win 2 in 1985! »
After the historic season of 1985, Spencer never again won a Grand Prix, paying a high price in his flesh for the efforts necessary for his feat. After his retirement from Grands Prix and a brief return to Superbike, Spencer founded a riding school before being inducted into the MotoGP Hall of Fame in 2001. Appointed president of the FIM MotoGP stewards panel from 2019 to 2024, his aura will suffer. , due to numerous incomprehensible and unexplained decisions.
