It's now official, Jorge Martin will wear the number 1 on the fairing of his Aprilia in 2015. If he wanted to leave doubt hanging until the presentation of his RS-GP for the coming season, the Spaniard admitted that he never had any doubts about this decision. He thus becomes the fifth MotoGP rider to start chasing the title with the number reserved for the world champion. The opportunity to remember who his predecessors were.
Nicky Hayden – 2007 :
After winning his historic duel against Valentino Rossi in 2006, Nicky Hayden chose to swap his favorite number 69 for number 1. He thus became the first rider in the MotoGP era to make this choice. Before him, Valentino Rossi had never turned his back on No. 46. The latter, however, did not bring him luck, since in 2007, Casey Stoner got his hands on the world title.
Casey Stoner – 2008 et 2012 :
The following year, No. 1 went to Casey Stoner's Ducati. Although he did not manage to keep it, the 27 also became the first driver to wear this symbolic number twice in the modern era of Grands Prix. After his second title, in 2012, he chose to recover the flocking reserved for the reigning champion.
Jorge Lorenzo – 2011:
Between Casey Stoner's two titles, Jorge Lorenzo had the experience of driving with the No. 1 in front of him. The Spaniard then won two new world crowns, in 2012, then in 2015. Despite everything, he chose to keep his initial number, 99.
-Pecco Bagnaia – 2023 and 2024 :
Between 2012 and 2023, no MotoGP world champion has chosen to take advantage. During each of his titles, Marc Marquez turned his back on number 1, to keep the number #93. Joan Mir and Fabio Quartararo imitated him once their hour of glory came. We had to wait more than 10 years, and the coronation of Pecco Bagnaia, in 2022, to see this lucky or cursed number, depending on opinions, make a comeback.
Bagnaia then doubled the stakes, winning the world crown in 2023. He thus became the first rider in the MotoGP era to successfully defend his number 1. After his defeat, in 2024, he will use the one he has always used in MotoGP, namely number 63.
Jorge Martín – 2025:
We now know that Jorge Martín will be the fifth MotoGP rider to wear the number 1 in Grand Prix. For the first time since the beginning of the modern era, in 2002, this number will be observed three years in a row in the category.
It remains to be seen whether, like Pecco Bagnaia, Jorge Martín will be able to defend this figure during the campaign which is about to begin. For the moment, the situation is far from being to his advantage, he having made the decision to join the official Aprilia team, where he will have a machine that is logically less efficient than the Desmosedici GP25 that Bagnaia will have. and Mark in the hands.
