MotoGP Barcelona – Organizing a Grand Prix gets complicated

After the cancellation of the Valencia Grand Prix, following the terrible floods which hit the city, MotoGP confirmed that another circuit would host the final of its 2024 championship.

Three or four places then came out of the woods to become the scene of the final of the fight between Jorge Martín and Pecco Bagnaia for the world title. The Losail circuit, in Qatar, and those of Jerez, Aragon and Barcelona, in Spain.

Ultimately, it was the Catalan site that came in pole position. The Barcelona Catalunya circuit thus received the honor of hosting the last event of the season. The official communication had not yet been released. Dorna officials, in charge of organizing the championship, had however affirmed that the latter could not wait.

However, it seems that things are getting complicated. Catalonia is currently facing major flooding as well. Many expressways, as well as Barcelona airport, were affected by the storm which moved towards northern Spain.

A question mark over Barcelona

At present, the facilities that must be put in place to accommodate the arrival of MotoGP in Barcelona are not damaged. But organizers could decide not to race in Barcelona for ethical reasons. Placed on red alert, Catalonia faces a situation which no more justifies running there than in Valencia. However, MotoGP and Dorna are certainly already evaluating all possible options.

The dates selected for the MotoGP race which was to be held in Barcelona were the same as those for which the Valencia Grand Prix was scheduled. Namely the weekend of November 15 to 17.

However, the decision was already controversial among some. Some Spanish pilots did not like the idea of celebrating an event on their land. Pointing out the fact that each Iberian circuit would be too close to the sad events that took place.

Racing for Valencia

As announced during the Malaysian GP, instead of racing in Valencia, MotoGP will instead race for Valencia. A relief fund has been created to ensure that this race has a positive impact on the region. It will help the victims of this natural disaster.

Note that the Sabadell bank, which has set up an account number to organize this fundraising, has promised to double each donation from its pocket. All information on the relief fund created by MotoGP to help the city of Valencia available ici.

A few pilots also promised to help the city in their own way. In Moto3, David Alonso, for example, assured that he would donate all the bonuses he received following his historic success in Malaysia to the cause. Jorge Martín promised something similar after the MotoGP Sprint.
