Moto2 Malaysia: Dixon eases off and misses the podium

After a great race, which he could have ended in style, Jake Dixon made an unusual error, which prevented him from getting on the podium. As he crossed the start/finish line in third position, the Briton released the throttle a lap too early, and offered the podium to one of his competitors.

Jake Dixon will certainly not have good memories of his last lap during the 2024 Moto2 Malaysian Grand Prix. After a spectacular race, which saw him return to the front from twelfth place on the starting grid, the no. 96 took advantage of a better tire strategy, and rubber in better condition, to fight for the podium.

Following the retirement of Ai Ogura due to a mechanical breakdown, the Aspar team driver defended third position with one lap to go. When crossing the line, and therefore starting the last loop of his event, Dixon got up, however, releasing the gas. Everything suggested that it was a mechanical failure, but the Briton actually ended his race one lap too early, thinking that he had just reached the finish.

Although he quickly realized his mistake, he was unable to defend his position. He thus offered this podium to his first opponent, since it was his teammate, Izan Guevara, who overtook him to enjoy the honors of getting on the box. A frustrating situation for the main person concerned who, however, quickly gets his head back on track after this incident.

“It was not an easy weekend because of everything that happened in Valencia, begins by recalling Dixon. It was a great race. I had managed to reach the top positions and I was fighting for the podium, but I couldn't do it. It's time to think about closing the season in the best possible way. »

A podium that Jake Dixon has been chasing since the Aragon Grand Prix. He who had started the second half of the season with three consecutive podiums, including two victories.

The fourth place he achieved at Sepang nevertheless allowed him to secure his first top-5 since the San Marino Grand Prix, the first of the two races to have been contested on the Misano circuit, last September.

Jake Dixon will now try to finish in style in Barcelona, ​​where the final round of this 2024 season will more than likely take place. A circuit which should suit the Briton, who won his first podium of the season there, coming out of a difficult period.
