MotoGP: the fate of the season finale in suspense after the Valencia drama

The terrible floods that hit Valencia have plunged the MotoGP world into uncertainty. The question of where the final of the 2024 season will be held arises acutely. The Ricardo Tormo Circuit, usually synonymous with celebration and competition, today bears the scars of the natural disaster. The infrastructure has been damaged, access is difficult and the organization of a Grand Prix in these conditions appears compromised.

The devastating force of storm DANA left indelible traces on calling into question the holding of the MotoGP season finale at
circuit Ricardo Tormo. The region, hit by floods and destruction, saw its emblematic places transformed under the onslaught of rain, and among them, the emblematic circuit which represents so many emotions for residents and MotoGP enthusiasts.

As the situation deteriorates, MotoGP officials find themselves faced with a major challenge: how to conclude the season in these difficult circumstances? The possibility
to cancel the Valencia Grand Prix provoked reactions within the organization and among the pilots. Although DANA did not directly damage the circuit, surrounding infrastructure, including access and spectator areas, suffered significant impacts.

Faced with this crisis, Dornathe organizer of MotoGP, is considering several alternatives to maintain the calendar and ensure a proper conclusion to the season. Yesterday, Carmelo Ezpeleta and his team came together in Malaysiaahead of the penultimate race of the season, to discuss the options available to them. Although no final decision has yet been made, time is of the essence and rapid communication is crucial, especially with the impending dismantling of the Sepang paddock.

Qatar, Catalonia or Portimao are evaluated as plan B in Valencia

One of the options considered would be to organize a second race on the Sepang track. This solution has logistical advantages, because the equipment is already on site. However, it also has disadvantages, including lack of availability of tires. Michelin and Pirelli are not prepared to manage two consecutive races on the same circuit, which could require a two-week delay to resolve the technical and logistical challenges.

Another alternative discussed would be Qatara popular destination for MotoGP. However, immediately moving to Qatar would also pose logistical challenges, requiring rapid preparation for teams and sponsors. This option could delay the holding of the Grand Prix until the end of November or the beginning of December.

Finally, several European sites are being considered to host the last race of the 2024 season. However, the Circuit de
Jerez would not be available due to the Lamborghini Trophy, while the Circuit de
Catalonia and the Circuit of
Portimao emerge as potential alternatives.

In all cases, the priority remains aid to the victims of DANA and the reconstruction of Valencewhile the world of MotoGP must navigate through this crisis to find an adequate solution to conclude an already emotional season.
