MotoGP announces engine freeze to prepare for 2027

MotoGP continues to prepare its great revolution for 2027. Before welcoming the new technical regulations which will bring major modifications to current machines. The Grand Prix Commission has agreed to freeze engine specifications in 2026.

This decision means that the engine specifications, used by the teams in 2025, will also be used in 2026. This proposal was made with the aim of controlling blows. To guarantee a certain fairness between the different factories, before the time of big changes, in 2027.

As a reminder, the big change in these new regulations concerns the engines. The cylinder capacity will increase from 1000 to 850 cm³. Close to that which was in force from 2007 to 2011, when the MotoGPs were 800 cm³.

The freezing of engines will allow each factory to fully concentrate on its projects for 2027. Without them having to concentrate on this aspect of development during the season which precedes this new regulation.

The only exceptions to this freeze exist for security or reliability reasons. Corrections for reasons of safety or reliability, or proven non-availability of components, may be authorized for all manufacturers. Provided there is no performance increase.

For dealership tier D factories, which are currently Yamaha and Honda, the engine specification freeze will not apply. Unless they change rank. The specifications will remain free as they are currently. This will allow those with a greater performance deficit to continue working on key areas of their machines.
