Due to flash floods which left more than 200 dead in Spain, the MotoGP Valencia Grand Prix (here in 2023) will not take place in 2024.

MOTO – “Run for Valencia but not in Valencia”. While the toll from the floods affecting the south-east of Spain is already very heavy but still provisional (at least 200 victims have been recorded), the idea that a motorcycle Grand Prix could take place there in two weeks had little meaning.

The organizers announced this Friday, November 1 that the outcome of the MotoGP season will not take place on the Valencia circuit. “The championship will concentrate its efforts to support relief and solidarity funds already in place”specifies the press release which records the cancellation.

It is also specified that the last round of the world championship will take place on another circuit and perhaps on a date other than Sunday November 17 as planned on the calendar.

Since Thursday, several world championship drivers had expressed their doubts about the opportunity to compete in the Grand Prix in Valencia. “In theory, we have a Grand Prix there. But now all the facilities must go to the people who lost their homes. It makes no sense to start repairing the damage when there are many people without a roof over their heads,” for example declared the six-time Spanish world champion Marc Marquez.

“Out of respect for the people there, and in terms of logistics, I think the best solution would be to go elsewhere”also said his compatriot Jorge Martin, current leader of the world championship. His pursuer, Francesco Bagnaia, declared a few moments later that he “ would rather not run there.”

The penultimate round of the world championship takes place this weekend in Malaysia.
