More than ten years after the series ended, Adrian Monk will be back in action. After airing in the United States on the Peacock channel last year, it is in France that America’s craziest detective will make his big comeback. The appointment was uncertain, it is now a done deal: almost a year after its broadcast across the Atlantic, The Last Case will air tonight on TF1, the same channel that broadcast the original series in the 2000s.

The reunion episode promised us a good dose of emotions, fans may not be disappointed. Fifteen years after their farewell to the public, Tony Shalhoub will reprise his cult role, alongside Traylor Howard (Natalie Teeger), Jason Gray-Stanford (Randy Disher), Melora Hardin (Trudy Monk), Hector Elizondo (Doctor Neven Bell), Ted Levine (Stottlemeyer), Caitlin McGee (Molly Evans) and Austin Scott (Griffin Briggs).
Much water has flowed under the bridge, but Adrian Monk is still as neurotic as ever. According to the official synopsis, the detective has not necessarily coped well with the health situation linked to covid-19: “After the pandemic exacerbates his phobias and causes him to lose his contract with his publisher, former detective Adrian Monk places all his hopes in the success of his stepdaughter Molly’s marriage.“. The reunion quickly turns to tragedy. when Molly’s fiancé suddenly dies in a bungee jumping accident, and Adrian suspects foul play.
As you can see, we should expect an (almost) return to the status quo at the beginning of the series. The resolution of Trudy’s murder has not transformed the character completely, and his behavioral problems are still very present. Ultimately, nothing really changes. Monk still hesitates between being detestable and endearing, but he has lost none of his sense of observation and deduction. At his side, Nathalie, Randy and Captain Stottlemeyer form a support that is still as solid as ever.
