Bulgaria’s highest ranked tennis player Grigor Dimitrov retired from his US Open quarterfinal match against American Frances Tiafoe at at 3-6 7-6(5) 3-6 1-4 on Wednesday after he suffered a groin injury at the end of the third set. That was his best result at the Grand Slam tournament since 2019 when he reached the semifinals by defeating Roger Federer.
“It doesn’t get easier, I tell you that much. But when you’ve done certain things a certain way throughout your career, a lot of moments, outside of tennis, really humble you in a very different way.” the Bulgarian said in his post-match press conference. “That’s why when I have something like that comes around, for sure I take it and I hurt with it, you have to. I don’t want to just, like, brush it off, like that’s fine. I put it aside, but also I have a lot of exciting things ahead of me. I can say, ‘OK, I’m going to get home, try to rest a little. I have an amazing exhibition coming around the corner to do with Novak [Djokovic]. Heading to Asia to finish the year off’.”

The world No. 9 will face Olympic gold medalist and record 24-time Grand Slam winner Djokovic in an exhibition match at 8 pm on September 17 in Arena Sofia. The show is organized by Grigor Dimitrov Foundation.
