Stock Photo Agency – A history of photojournalism in Quebec

Montreal, August 28, 2024 – A must-have coffee table book for the new school year, Agence Stock Photo. A History of Photojournalism in Quebec offers us a summary of the history of Quebec over the past 40 years by the greatest Quebec photographers!

In 1987, three young photographers decided to found a photography agency. Like major press agencies such as Reuters or AFP, Robert Fréchette, Jean-François LeBlanc and Martin Roy created an independent and collective structure that was still unprecedented in Quebec. For nearly forty years, Stock covered the major events that shaped Quebec society. From the Referendum on Quebec sovereignty to the Maple Spring, including the Kanehsatà:ke resistance (or Oka crisis) and the Summit of the Americas, this collective of photographers was able to bring a diversity of perspectives to the major social, political and cultural issues that marked the history of Quebec.

Their images have appeared in the largest national and international French-language newspapers, helping to shape our collective view and memory. Whether it is Robert Fréchette’s photographs of Nunavik and the Inuit community, Caroline Hayeur’s portraits of rave and techno culture in Montreal (Antoine-Desilets Prize), Benoit Aquin’s photographic explorations (Pictet Prize) on hunting, or Normand Blouin or Horacio Paone’s current affairs reports, the 117 colour and black and white photographs that make up this book paint a sensitive and valuable portrait of Quebec society.

The book includes an introduction by author and photographer Sophie Bertrand, an essay by photography historian Vincent Lavoie, and two major interviews with previously unpublished photographers Jean-François LeBlanc and Caroline Hayeur.

Agence Stock Photo is an invitation to see or re-see the images that have made the history of Quebec and which constitute, through their humanist richness, a true tribute to Quebec and Quebecers!
